A Gluten-Free and Health-Conscious Travel Guide to Chania, Crete, Greece

Greece’s largest island. My motherland.

I am writing this guide while preparing for my wedding here. I have been asked to create something like this for a long time, and this moment felt like the natural point to finally sit down and put it into words.

What I love about Crete is its elemental intelligence. The water is healing in every form, from mountain springs and snow melt that feed the land to the sea that surrounds it on all sides. Across the island there are four mountain ranges, and it is not unusual to find yourself swimming in the ocean while looking up at snow capped peaks. That contrast has a way of staying in your body long after you leave. Then you have the Venetian Port of Old Town Limani, which is just dreamy. A mix of nature, history, art and architecture, and so much more.

Meals are simple and rooted in place, with ingredients that are local and seasonal. Nothing feels rushed. The pace of life shifts without effort, and your system begins to follow it.

LOGISTICS

When to go:
I prefer fall through spring, outside of high season. It’s still beautiful, but more temperate, with fewer mosquitoes, fewer tourists, and it’s significantly more budget friendly.

Getting there and around:
Chania has a small airport. From there, you can take a taxi (there are no Uber services), or rent a car.

If you’re staying in downtown Chania, a rental car can actually be more of a hassle since parking is limited and everything in the old town is walkable. In that case, it’s usually easier to skip the car entirely.

If you do plan to rent a car and explore the island, I recommend staying just outside the city instead. That way you avoid parking stress and have easier access in and out of town.

A great option is the Chania Free Electric Shuttle system. You can park at the designated lot and take the shuttle directly into Chania city and the old town. It makes staying outside the center much easier and removes the stress of parking entirely.

And even if you’re staying in the city, you can still use it in reverse, park outside the center, take the shuttle in, and then walk over to the beautiful Agioi Apostoloi beaches.

Elli’s Healthy Specialities

One of the most unique gluten free and raw focused spots in Chania. This is not a traditional bakery but a plant based, refined sugar free, and gluten free dessert shop that focuses on raw cakes, energy bites, granola, nut based sweets, and functional treats.

It is especially helpful if you want something sweet that feels safe and intentional rather than navigating conventional bakeries. The space leans more holistic and wellness oriented, and it is one of the only places in the city where gluten free is fully central rather than an accommodation.

WHERE TO SWIM

Agioi Apostoloi Beaches

Falassarna Beach

About an hour south. Wide, expansive, and best at sunset.

Elafonissi Beach

Pink sand and shallow water in the south. About a two hour drive.

Balos Lagoon

More effort to reach, but so beautiful. Also, about two hour drive.

GET OUTSIDE (The Beach)

Lake Kournas on 35mm film

Agioi Apostoloi Park

A walking park right across from the beach area. Shaded paths, locals walking, a free mini zip line and outdoor workout machines.

Lake Kournas (Where we are getting married)

Lake Kournas is the only natural freshwater lake in Crete and has a very distinct calm energy compared to the coastline. It sits between hills and feels quieter, softer, and more inland in atmosphere.

You can walk around parts of the lake, rent small pedal boats, or simply sit at one of the lakeside cafes. The water is shallow near the edges and deepens toward the center, and the surrounding hills create a sheltered, almost enclosed feeling.

It works well as a mid day stop between Chania and Rethymno or as part of a slow inland loop day.

Botanical Park & Gardens of Crete
A large botanical garden set in the hills outside Chania that feels immersive and slow in the best way. The walk takes you through fruit trees, medicinal herbs, flowers, and shaded mountain paths. It is designed as a looping trail so you naturally move through different climates and plant zones.

It is best experienced without rushing. The sensory experience is strong, especially scent, temperature shifts, and quiet natural sound.

There is a cafe on site that serves simple local food and drinks, often using ingredients grown in or around the garden. It is more of a resting point than a dining destination and works best midway through your walk.

Samaria Gorge National Park

The Samaria Gorge is one of the most iconic hikes in Crete and one of the longest natural gorges in Europe. It runs through the White Mountains and stretches from the Omalos Plateau down to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli.

The experience is not just a hike but a full day movement through changing terrain. It begins in pine forest and high mountain air, gradually narrowing into dramatic limestone walls that tower above you as you descend. The riverbed becomes your path for much of the journey, and the landscape shifts constantly in scale and texture.

It is a physically demanding hike, mostly downhill for several hours, with uneven stone paths and sections that require steady footing. The full route is typically around 16 kilometers and takes most people between 5 and 7 hours depending on pace and breaks.

What makes it memorable is not just the effort but the contrast. You move from alpine silence to deep gorge walls to eventually arriving at the Libyan Sea at Agia Roumeli, where you can swim and recover before taking the ferry out.

It is best done in cooler months of the season or early in the day during peak summer. Good shoes, water, and pacing matter much more than speed.

Chania Wine Tours

A small, husband and wife run company offering some of the most personal and immersive wine experiences in Western Crete. The tours are led by a certified sommelier and a winemaker, which makes the experience feel more like being guided through the island by people who are deeply rooted in its land and wine culture rather than a typical tour structure.

They offer both private and small group experiences that include vineyard visits, wine tastings, farm visits, olive oil production, and meals in the countryside, often with access to places you would not easily reach on your own.
